Just Because It’s Common Doesn’t Mean It’s Normal
Feeling anxious, dealing with joint pain, or struggling with blood sugar issues? You’re not alone—these problems are more common than ever. But just because everyone around you is experiencing them doesn’t mean they’re normal.
The Myth of Common = Normal
First, let’s talk about why so many of us think symptoms like anxiety, joint pain, or even diabetes are normal. Nearly half of Americans report experiencing anxiety or depression at some point in their lives, and conditions like joint pain or blood sugar imbalances are becoming more and more prevalent. It’s easy to look around and think, “Well, if everyone else is feeling this way, maybe it’s just part of getting older or living a busy life.”
But here’s the truth: just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal. Fifty years ago, these kinds of chronic health issues weren’t as widespread. So, what’s changed? The environment we live in, the food we eat, and the way we live our lives.
The Rise of Environmental Toxins and Poor Diets
A major reason why these health issues are more prevalent today is the rise in environmental toxins. We’re exposed to more chemicals and pollutants than ever before—in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Pesticides, plastics, and heavy metals surround us, building up in our bodies over time. This toxic load leads to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and damage to our organs.
On top of that, the Standard American Diet (SAD) is loaded with processed foods, added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives. This kind of diet deprives your body of essential nutrients and adds to the inflammation and oxidative stress fueling chronic diseases. Instead of whole, nutrient-rich foods, we’re consuming empty calories that contribute to poor mental and physical health. Fifty years ago, people weren’t eating like this—and they weren’t dealing with these kinds of health issues on such a large scale.
Why It’s Important to Challenge What You Think Is “Normal”
Because these issues are so common, many people think they’re inevitable. But this mindset stops us from looking for real solutions. If you believe your joint pain or fatigue is just “part of life,” why would you make the effort to fix it? The truth is, these symptoms are warning signs. Your body is telling you something is off, and ignoring those signs only allows the problem to get worse.
It’s important to challenge the idea that feeling anxious, tired, or in pain all the time is normal. These symptoms are often reversible, but they require us to address the root causes, whether that’s poor nutrition, lack of movement, or exposure to toxins. The first step is recognizing that you don’t have to accept these issues as your “new normal.”
What You Can Do to Break the Cycle

So, what can you do to break free from this cycle? Start by taking a closer look at your lifestyle:
Eat Nutrient-Dense Foods: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These provide the nutrients your body needs to heal and thrive.
Reduce Your Toxic Load: Filter your water, choose clean, non-toxic products, and limit your exposure to chemicals in your home and environment. These small changes can lower inflammation and give your body the space it needs to heal.
Prioritize Movement: Regular exercise reduces inflammation, supports brain health, and balances hormones. Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement daily.
Address Symptoms Proactively: If you’re feeling anxious, dealing with pain, or noticing other chronic issues, don’t just accept them—dig deeper. Work with a healthcare professional to uncover root causes and create a plan to address them.
Final Thoughts
Just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s normal. You don’t have to live with chronic symptoms, and you can take steps to improve your health, no matter what everyone else is experiencing. We’re all going to age (and I’m going kicking and screaming), but we want to age gracefully. Who wants to be in pain for the last 30 years of their life? Not me! Start making small, sustainable changes today, and take back control of your health.
